What is Emotional Wellness?
A holistic approach to life includes active participation in your health decisions and healing processes, and also to make wellness-oriented lifestyle choices.
Emotional wellness is an ongoing dynamic process of change and growth. It inspires self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the development of inner strength. It is also the ability to respond resiliently and effectively to changing emotional states and effectively cope with a wide variety of situations that present challenges and obstacles.
Emotional wellness also includes the ability to learn and grow from experiences. Emotional well-being encourages autonomy and proper decision making skills.
Emotional wellness is an important part of overall wellness and is closely interconnected and easily affected by a disturbance in any of the other dimensions of wellness.
There are eight dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, social, intellectual and occupational.

The emotional wellness dimension involves developing awareness and acceptance of your feelings and mastering the ability to effectively manage thoughts, feelings and incoming stressors in a manner that enables you to maintain a positive emotional state where content, joy, love and happiness can be felt.
Why is Emotional Wellness Important?
Emotional wellness is highly important to our physical, intellectual, spiritual and social lives. Like physical wellness, emotional wellness affects everyday life. It either makes a day more pleasurable or more difficult, depending on the circumstances. Emotional wellness consists of optimism, trust, self-esteem, self-acceptance, self-confidence, self-control and healthy relationships.
Being emotionally well grants you the power to express feelings without constraints. You are able to enjoy emotional expression and feel good about yourself, achieve a positive and optimistic attitude, high self-esteem, a strong self-image, and to create and maintain satisfying relationships.
Once you have mastered emotional wellness, life will be experienced a bit differently. Life will be more balanced and a deep sense of awareness will emerge.

- Smile! Be positive. Remind yourself to stay positive, always. Forgive yourself when you’re not.
- Each day, every day, do daily affirmations. Your brain will eventually turn off the entire negative and begin believing the positive – REALLY!

- Empower yourself and practice saying “No” without guilt.
- Accept yourself, just as you are. Accept others, just as they are. Accept the world, just as it is.
- Mistakes are life learning experiences. Give yourself a break and forgive yourself and others.
- Manage and balance your other personal dimensions of wellness, especially physical wellness as this dimension has a direct positive influence on emotional wellness when in balance.
Balancing Emotional Wellness:
Emotional wellness enables one to maintain satisfying relationships, deal with conflict and remain grounded during stressful times. The path to emotional wellness may also involve seeking out support from a mental health professional when needed and gathering information in order to make informed decisions.
To balance Emotional Wellness, you will need to figure out what you need to change for YOURSELF and take the steps in that direction. If you are not happy with yourself, it will be difficult to be happy with someone else in any relationship. Learn how to get in touch with yourself to help explore how confident you are with yourself and to make changes. This will help identify your own personal struggles and then finding solutions is the next step.
If it is difficult or feels impossible to handle things yourself, definitely get help from a confidant friend or even a therapist. It will help, it will work and you will change and become whole again.
Remember this one thing, you were happy or at peace at some point in your life - for many this was as a child. Try to remember how this felt and know you can get there again. Everything WILL be ok, no matter what.
