Social Wellness for Holistic Health

What is Social Wellness?

A holistic approach to life includes active participation in your health decisions and healing processes, and to make wellness-oriented lifestyle choices.

Social wellness refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with others. It involves building healthy, nurturing and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with those around you. Social wellness entails embracing interconnectedness, and understanding how your actions affect other people and their community.

Social wellness involves building and maintaining healthy, intimate, loving and supportive relationships as well as fostering a general connection with everyone around you which includes your family, friends, colleagues, and strangers throughout life.

There are eight dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, social, intellectual and occupational. These dimensions are interrelated with another and are equally vital in the pursuit of optimum health. By understanding, maintaining and optimizing each dimension of wellness, an optimal level of health and wellness can be reached.

The social wellness dimension entails valuing living in harmony with your fellow human beings, seeking positive, interdependent relationships with others, and developing healthy communication skills. Socially well people consciously choose to enhance personal relationships, nurture important friendships, and build a just and caring community. Being socially well enhances physical and emotional wellbeing.

Why is Social Wellness Important?

Social wellness is an important and necessary aspect of overall wellness. It helps define a portion of who we are and how we feel towards achieving a full and complete life. It is closely intertwined with emotional, physical and mental wellness. For example, healthy relationships can have a huge and positive impact on a person’s well-being. Similarly, unhealthy and dysfunctional relationships can lead to chronic illnesses and disorders.

A healthy relationship is one that promotes individuality, personal growth and brings out the best in both people. It’s about sharing aspects of your life with another person and they in turn share aspects of their life with you. You should both feel comfortable about being yourself around each other and have mutual respect, value and trust for one another.

Not everyone or every relationship is perfect. Strive towards seeking positive, interdependent relationships with others, and developing healthy behaviors. Maintaining social wellness allows you to practice empathy and active listening.
