What are Varicose Veins?Varicose veins are typically enlarged flesh-colored, blue or purple veins often found on the calf or on the leg. They often appear twisted and bulging, may be swollen and raised above the surface of the skin and can become quite painful. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but they are smaller and usually found on the legs and face and are typically harmless. Varicose veins develop in the legs when there is a restriction of blood flow to the heart, causing the blood to pool and stretch the veins. Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps to stop the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs back to the heart. If the one-way valve becomes weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect. Pooled blood enlarges the vein and it becomes varicose. Varicose Veins SymptomsVaricose veins symptoms encompass any vein that becomes varicose (abnormally or unusually enlarged or swollen), but the veins most commonly affected are those in the legs and feet. That's because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins in the lower body. Varicose veins symptoms can also include sores, skin ulcers and rashes on the skin tissue around the varicose veins. For many people, the varicose veins have no problematic symptoms and are simply a cosmetic concern. However, others experience painful varicose veins and significant discomfort. Varicose veins can also signal a higher risk of circulation problems. What Causes Varicose Veins? The causes of varicose veins vary from person to person and many factors can contribute to the risk of developing varicose veins. Age and genetic predisposition are factors and risk increases during pregnancy and with age. Possible varicose vein causes include high blood pressure, blood-flow restriction from tight clothing, heart-valve damage which alters the flow of blood, excess weight and lack of exercise. Other causes of varicose veins include hormonal changes due to menopause, pregnancy and/or puberty. Additionally, leg injury, prolonged standing and other activity that weakens vein valves can contribute to the development of varicose veins. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins around the anus. They may be caused by constipation, pregnancy, obesity, lack of exercise or standing for long periods of time, all put extra pressure on the perineal area. Keep veins in good shape with a diet full of natural foods. Varicose Veins TreatmentConventional varicose vein treatment:
